Frozen Berries Hepatitis A Virus Outbreak Fact Sheet (Australia)

This fact sheet has been prepared by The Fresh Produce Safety Centre A-NZ (FPSC) and PMA A-NZ staff, principally food safety expert Richard Bennett, to outline and address the main issues and concerns raised by the outbreak of foodborne illness attributed to hepatitis A virus (HAV) in Australia. At least ten people have been confirmed as infected as at 18th February 2015. 

Recall notices published by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) were as follows:

  • 14/02/15 3:54 pm Nanna’s Mixed Berries 1kg
  • 15/02/15 1:08 pm Creative Gourmet Mixed Berries 300g and 500g
  • 16/02/15 8:02 pm Nanna’s Raspberries 1kg

Package Assisting Small Exporters: Australian Government Department of Agriculture

On 13 May 2014, the Australian Government announced a $15 million package to assist sm​all exporters, comprising three components - a rebate for eligible small exporters is available in 2014-15 to assist with export registration charges; a review of export fees and charges; and funding for projects that will help improve market access for small exporters.

The Department of Agriculture's website advises:

"Applications for funding opened in February 2015. Applications should be received by 5pm (AEST) on 30 April 2015. It is anticipated that all applicants will be advised of the outcome of their application in mid 2015."

"You don’t bring me flowers": a Valentine’s ballad [Roy Morgan Research]

Ladies, if you’re hoping for a bunch of flowers this Valentine’s Day, buy them yourself! The latest data from Roy Morgan Research shows that less than 15% of Australian men bought fresh flowers in an average three months last year, with this figure rising only fractionally during the key January-March quarter.
