Companies in the foodservice sector are required to find new ways to address government regulations, food safety-related product recalls and other challenges in order to stay competitive, noted PMA's Dr. Bob Whitaker in his Foodservice Conference educational session, "Food Safety, Technology & You." Whitaker touched on conventional vs. organic produce, the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), big data and personal responsibility in food safety.

In his interactive session, in which attendees could respond to questions via text, he asked: Is organic safer than conventional?

Mega Regional Free Trade Agreements: potential game changers for global fresh produce

Wednesday, 3 December 2014 | Posted in Global Trade by Erin Hart

The number of free trade agreements (FTAs) have been increasing significantly since the 1990s, facilitating trade by removing barriers such as tariffs, taxes and other regulations. This PMA report gives an overview of the major regional FTAs or economic blocks currently in play that could reshape world trade rules for the 21st century, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) which directly affect trade with Australia and New Zealand.

NZ Yersinia Outbreak Source Investigation Final Report 2014

Monday, 1 December 2014 | Posted in Food Safety/Traceability by Erin Hart

An investigation by New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) into the source of a Yersinia pseudotuberculosis outbreak in September has found no conclusive link to fresh carrots and lettuce, as had been originally suspected.

Despite extensive investigation, the failure to pin down a definitive source of the pathogen is not unusual in Y. pseudotuberculosis outbreaks around the world. Globally Y. pseudotuberculosis outbreaks are rare and for New Zealand it was unprecedented.

The Final Yersinia Outbreak Source Investigation Report was authorised for release by the Minister for Food Safety on Friday 28th November.
